# What is LJT used for? The token behind a Lemon Jet round

LJT powers predictions and vault liquidity on Base. Learn how the token works, what vault shares represent, and why playing also needs ETH.

A token's purpose becomes easier to understand when you follow it through
something people can actually do. In Lemon Jet, start with a round: a player
chooses an amount of LJT and a target multiplier, signs a transaction, and
waits for the contract to settle the result.

LJT is the token used for those predictions and their payouts. It also supplies
the liquidity behind the game when holders deposit it into the vault. Those
two uses connect the player choosing a multiplier with the pool that must be
able to pay a winning round.

## What is LJT?

LJT is Lemon Jet's game token on the Base network. You can hold it in a
compatible wallet, use it to place predictions, or deposit it into the
game's liquidity vault.

The [verified LJT contract on BaseScan](https://basescan.org/address/0x25A52BF483E20F83D59058B680A956e8B239051c#code)
identifies the token used by the current application.

Each action has a different purpose. A player commits tokens to a round. A
vault depositor provides capital that backs payouts. Someone simply holding
LJT in a wallet has a token balance, without either of those positions.

The [Lemon Jet app](/app) connects these actions, but the distinction matters
when you decide what you want to do with your tokens.

## LJT is what you play with

When you enter an amount in Lemon Jet, you are choosing how much LJT to commit
to that prediction. You also choose a multiplier, which determines the payout
if the round wins under the game's rules.

The tokens move through a transaction you authorize. If the game contract
does not already have permission to spend your LJT, your wallet can first ask
for a token approval. Read that permission as well as the transaction itself;
an approval and a bet are separate actions.

After the bet is accepted, Chainlink VRF supplies verifiable randomness and
the contract resolves the outcome. A successful prediction pays out in LJT.
A losing prediction means the LJT committed to that round is lost.

Having more tokens lets you commit a different amount within the game's
limits. It does not give your wallet a better random result. The relationship
between a chosen multiplier and its chance of winning belongs to the game
rules, not your token balance.

For the sequence from wallet setup to a settled round, see the
[first prediction guide](/blog/first-prediction). For the randomness itself,
see [how Chainlink VRF resolves a round](/blog/vrf-explained).

## LJT also backs the other side of the game

A winning prediction needs a pool of tokens behind it. Lemon Jet's vault
provides that pool, and holders can contribute by depositing LJT.

In return, the contract issues vault shares. Think of a share as
a record of your proportional position in the pool. The amount of LJT that
position represents depends on the vault's assets and the shares outstanding.

This creates a second way to use LJT: providing liquidity. You take exposure
to the pool's results while other players take exposure to individual rounds.

Bets enter the vault; winning rounds are paid from it, while losing stakes
remain in the pool. Its return depends on what happens in the game.
A period with large player wins can reduce the LJT value of vault shares.
More game activity does not guarantee
a positive result over a particular day, week or month.

Holding LJT in your wallet does not automatically put it into this pool.
Depositing is a separate transaction and a separate decision. The
[staking vault explainer](/blog/ljt-staking-vault) goes deeper into where
returns come from and why they can be negative.

## LJT, vault shares and ETH: different balances, different jobs

These names can appear during the same session, so it helps to keep their
roles clear.

| Asset | Its role in Lemon Jet |
| --- | --- |
| LJT | The game token used for predictions, payouts and vault deposits. |
| Vault shares | Your position in the game vault. Its LJT redemption value depends on the pool. |
| ETH on Base | Pays network gas and the game's randomness request cost in the standard wallet flow. |

LJT is not the gas token of Base. A wallet can hold enough LJT for a prediction
and still need ETH on Base to submit the transaction and fund its Chainlink
VRF request. ETH held on a different network is not automatically available
for those costs.

To turn vault shares into spendable LJT, you use the vault's withdrawal flow.
Check the available amount and the withdrawal details before signing:
withdrawals depend on available liquidity, and the current contract applies
an exit fee. The
[verified game and vault contract](https://basescan.org/address/0xf36fed68017f6e84d2eb1d4bd35ab56ae0cd914a#code)
is the source for those mechanics.

## Where referrals fit into the token's utility

Lemon Jet also uses the vault-share mechanism for referral rewards. When a
player with a recorded referrer places an eligible bet, the contract uses
that bet to calculate a reward and issues vault shares to the referrer.

This makes the reward part of the game's liquidity system. Receiving it gives
the referrer a vault position whose LJT value can change with the pool.

The [referral program guide](/blog/lemon-jet-referral-program) explains the
current rate, how a referral becomes confirmed, and how the reward is redeemed.

## What makes the utility useful to understand

Each use of LJT comes with its own exposure. The vault can lose value,
a bet can lose its full stake, and LJT's market price can fall. Working
token utility does not establish a future price or
a guaranteed return.

The useful thing about this design is that the movement of tokens and the
settlement rules can be inspected on-chain. You can check what a transaction
did instead of relying only on a number displayed by the website.

## FAQ

### What is the LJT token used for?

LJT is used to place predictions and receive winning payouts in Lemon Jet
on Base. Holders can also deposit LJT into the game's vault to provide
liquidity in exchange for vault shares.

### Do I earn a return just by holding LJT?

Holding LJT in a wallet does not automatically create a vault position or
staking return. Depositing into the vault is a separate action, and its
return is variable and can be negative.

### Are vault shares the same as LJT?

Vault shares represent a position in the game pool. LJT is the underlying
game token. The amount of LJT redeemable from shares depends on the pool's
current state, withdrawal fees and available liquidity.

### Do I need ETH if I already have LJT?

In the standard wallet flow, you need ETH on Base to pay transaction gas
and the game's Chainlink VRF request cost. Your LJT balance covers the tokens
committed to the prediction.

### Does staking improve my chances of winning?

A vault position does not improve a prediction's odds. Game outcomes follow
the contract's rules and verified randomness, independently of whether a
player also holds vault shares.
